About Our Cherries

Big Flavour, Despite the Climate

Although Niagara is not known for its cherries, we select our varieties for big flavour, crunchy texture, and hardiness in our climate. We grow early, mid, and late season cherries, sweet, sour, and white.

Cherry season starts as early as July 5th and goes until August 20th. There will always be slight variations in ripening times, farming is connected to Mother Nature.

Our Cherry Varieties

From dark, firm sweet cherries to delicate white cherries and tangy sour cherries for baking.

Dark & Firm

Sweet Cherries

Big, juicy, eat-out-of-the-basket favourites.

Bing

A large, black, firm, good-quality cherry. Originated in the Pacific Coast region and is a major cultivar in Washington, Oregon, B.C., and Niagara.

Vista

Larger, much firmer, and attractive, packed with flavour. Cracking can be a problem in young plantings.

Stella

Large, firm, black, fair-quality cherry. Ripens about two days before Vic. Its outstanding feature is self-fertility.

Black Pearl

A sweet cherry quickly becoming a popular favourite. Known for its classic sugary dark cherry flavour, firm, large, round, with outstanding flavour.

Hedelfingen

A medium-to-large, firm, good-quality black cherry with good resistance to cracking. The cultivar most extensively planted in Ontario.

Delicate & Sweet

White Cherries

Light flesh, exceptionally sweet, often with a red blush.

Rainier

Prized for exceptionally sweet, large, golden-yellow fruit with a distinctive red blush. Firm, creamy-yellow flesh and very sweet flavour, often described as the best of all yellow cherries.

Stardust

A newer variety, often considered the sweetest. Originating in Summerland, B.C. A late-maturing blush sweet cherry, light orange-red and yellow, heart-shaped, with creamy-white flesh and excellent flavour.

Tart & Bright

Sour Cherries

For pies, jams, and anyone who loves a tangy bite.

Montmorency

The number-one selling sour/tart cherry in North America. Used mainly for baking, perfect for pies and jams. Strong tart and tangy flavour. Cold-hardy trees ideal for Canadian climates.

Morello

Mouth-watering, tart, and aromatic. Large heart-shaped, freestone cherry that turns a very dark wine red when fully ripe. Firmer texture than Montmorency, perfect for eating, cooking, and pie making.
