Our Story
Our story begins when we decided to rebuild our lives together, continuing the tradition of tender fruit farming in Niagara.
Our Hearts + Passions Came Together
Our hearts + passions came together after deciding that the best way forward, was to pivot and do what we both know and love ……GROW delicious & nutritious Food. Ignacio had some convincing to do but when he looked me in my eyes and said TRUST me this is the best way forward for us. I did just that and took the leap of faith.
Ignacio’s Journey
Ignacio, originally from Mexico, started coming to Canada in 2005, through the Seasonal Agriculture Worker Program to work as a general farm labourer. Ignacio quickly realized he had a passion for farming and he was good at making things grow. Each year gave him the opportunity to hone his skills and learn to speak English. Ignacio pours his heart & soul into his work and is committed to walking the fields everyday to determine when the fruit has reached it’s full ripeness. Ignacio strives to deliver fruits full of flavour and nutrient rich.
Mimi’s Roots
Mimi’s parents came to Canada in 1974 and purchased a fruit farm in Niagara; Mimi spent her summers learning and working on her family’s fruit farm. At the time it all felt like such hard work but there was also so many memories made. After growing up Mimi went on to pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer. She had a successful designer business in Toronto for 10 years, before returning to Niagara to work with her brother, Milan, who had taken over the Bizjak Family Farm.
The Farm
Purchasing Bizjak Farms
In 2014, the opportunity came to purchase the original Bizjak Farms from Mimi’s brother and in 2014 we were able to get financing and began working with the land.
The first few years were very tough. We did not have much in the way of equipment and the farm needed a lot of replanting and tending to the soil. Ignacio spent most of the evenings doing research on best growing practices and visiting other fruit farmers in the area; who we came to know and who were respected for their farming practices. It was very important to both of us that we were learning from other farmers that aligned with our values and philosophy.
Over A Decade Later
Over a decade later we have been blessed to have been able to grow and thrive in a community that has supported us throughout the years. We feel so deeply connected to this land that has been in our family for over four decades and so grateful to this land that has given us the financial means to feed our family and teach our children the importance of growing healthy, nutrient rich food, that nurtures the body and soul. There’s a reason the saying goes “You are what you eat”.
