Our unique micro-climate, nestled safely between the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario, usually shields our tender fruits. This year, however, the weather is forcing local growers to pivot at every single turn. From the cold, long winter swings to a highly compressed summer harvest, here is an honest look inside what it takes to bring Niagara fruit to your table when the weather refuses to cooperate.

We are now into July in our fruit farming season of 2026. It has been one of the most challenging seasons that we have faced in a while. Lots of intense rain mixed with the sunny periods makes for so many challenges. Wet, humid conditions breed more fungus, rotting & pests. While the sun is excellent for pumping sugars into the fruit, the extreme heat accelerated fruit maturity at a dizzying pace. Suddenly, weeks of planned harvesting windows shrunk into a matter of days. I remember my parents always saying that it’s harder to farm fruit in a wet, humid season (like this year) than in a hot, dry season.
